Sometimes the rules of the business world are a bit silly. Your true level of English writing, speaking, or whatever don’t always matter. For certain types of jobs, you absolutely need to improve your writing scores for the TOEIC test. I don’t understand why people actually care about those writing scores, but they do, and unfortunately I can’t change the world.

The good news is that I can help you with your writing ability. This will translate to the TOEIC test or any kind of real world situation where you need to write something, whether for business or whatever.

A lot of people make the mistake of thinking that the amount of “practice time” is what is important. I know from experience that it is “how” your practice that makes all the difference in your writing.

You need someone who is a native speaker read what you write and comment on it. Otherwise, you will keep making the same mistakes over and over again. It’s easy to reach a level and then stop improving. It happens all the time and it’s just crazy. You don’t need to spend years practicing as long as you are using the right method. You need to write about a range of different topics so that you get comfortable using a variety of words in the correct ways. Then, as I said before, you need to have a group of people, with better writing skills than yours, give you suggestions to improve. It sounds simple but it’s really not the way most people learn.

If you are studying for the TOEIC test you should really take advantage of modern technology like learning Apps. I’ve been helping students from Korea, Japan, and China improve their TOEIC for several years. I know what helps and what doesn’t.

Most students waste a lot of time and money on expensive schools, boring and useless textbooks, or some other stupid study method. They end up frustrated and annoyed. Worst of all, their TOEIC test doesn’t improve much.

I’ve searched the internet and the real world for great ways to study and I’ve finally found something that is really useful. I’ve used this with several students and ALL of them love it. I finally decided to recommend it on this site. The website doesn’t look like it is designed for the TOEIC, TOEFL, or IELTS, but it really is. It is especially good for the TOEIC.

Vaccine: A kind of medicine, usually given in the form of an injection, to make it so someone can’t get a certain type of disease

Vaccinating children from preventable diseases has saved millions of lives.

Many governments spend millions of dollars each year to research new vaccines.

Proportion: Ratio; very similar to percentage

The proportion of girls studying engineering is much higher now than it was 40 years ago, although most engineering students are still boys.

Recession: A big decline in economic activity. A situation where it’s difficult to find good jobs.

You should save money in case the economy goes into a recession and you lose your job.

Unemployment: This refers to people out of work.

Unemployment is at an all time high in our country right now. So many people are finding it very difficult to find work.

Seeking: Looking for; hoping to get.

Many old people are very lonely and seek companionship.

Many people decide to move to another country because they are seeking adventure.

The pharmacy is closed so you’ll have to wait until tomorrow to get your medicine.

Pharmacist: The highest level person working in the pharmacy.

The pharmacist told me that my doctor recommended the wrong drug for my condition. I have no idea who I should listen to.

Prescription: A written order from a doctor for a medication.

You need a prescription in order to buy many types of medication.

Recruit: To obtain new members

NBA basketball teams send scouts to high schools to see if they can recruit some future superstars

The US military offers a lot of benefits to help recruit new soldiers

Potential: having the capability to become something

He’s never played basketball before, but he’s very tall and athletic. I think he has the potential to become great.

Compensation packages: The salary and other benefits an employee receives.

The company agreed to offer her an amazing compensation package, including free housing and a 50% salary increase, if she agrees to move to Shanghai for a one year contract.

Persuade: To make someone agree to do something; convince

She’s very persuasive. She convinced her boyfriend to give her half of his salary.

It’s hard to persuade him to do anything. He’s very stubborn.

People who may be predisposed to the disease should make sure they see the doctor regularly, just to be on the safe side. People who have a close relative with cancer are more likely to have a genetic predisposition to the disease.

Survival rate: The percentage of the people who don’t die from something.

The survival rate for many types of cancer is quite high if the cancer is detected early.

Predisposed/predisposition: Susceptibility to something, usually a disease. If you have a predisposition for cancer, it means that you are more likely to get cancer.

His father and brother both have heart problems. He should make sure he doesn’t smoke and stays healthy because he probably has a predisposition to the disease.

People who work in smokey bars and restaurants are predisposed to lung cancer.

I’m glad the doctor warned me about taking this medication. He said that 4 pills are potent enough to put a horse to sleep. I’m pretty sensitive so I think I’ll start by just taking one quarter of a pill.

You don’t need to put so much of that spice in this dish. A little bit goes a long way. It’s really potent.

Sensitive: Being able to easily experience feelings and emotions. Easily harmed by external factors

You really shouldn’t tell her you didn’t like her speech. She’s really sensitive and might cry.

I’m trying to decide which type of computer I want to buy. Laptops aren’t quite as fast as desktops for the money, but at least they are portable. I travel a lot for work so I guess I’ll buy a laptop since portability is quite important to me.

For the money: This expression means “for the same amount of money”. It refers to good value

I don’t want to go to that restaurant. I know the food is good but it’s not good for the money. (ie. not a good deal)

You should by the same phone I have. It’s really good for the money.

Portable: mobile, able to move easily from one place to another

If my stereo speakers were portable, I’d bring them to your house for the party.

I’m moving to Tokyo next week. You can have anything in my house that isn’t easily portable.
