What is the TOEIC Test?
TOEIC (The Test of English for International Communication) is a test for the English language designed to measure everyday practical English skills for people working in an international environment. The test is owned by ETS (English Testing Service) and is given to an estimated 3 million test takers in 60 different countries per year.
TOEIC Test Format
The TOEIC test has 200 multiple-choice questions which are based on real-life work situations. The test is divided into two sections; listening comprehension and reading. Each of the sections of the TOEIC test are timed separately.
Section 1: Listening Comprehension:
- variety of recordings including short conversations in English
- 100 questions
- 45 minutes to complete section
The listening comprehension section of the TOEIC test is divided into four parts.
- Photographs (10 questions)
- Question-response (30 questions)
- Conversation (30 questions)
- Talks (30 questions)
Section 2: Reading
- variety of different readings
- 100 marks
- 75 minutes to complete
The reading section of the TOEIC test has three parts.
- Incomplete sentences (40 questions)
- Text completion (12 questions)
- Reading comprehension (48 questions)
The entire TOEIC test is about 2.5 hours. Part of this time includes responding to biographical questions and filling out a brief questionnaire about your education and work history.
